00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.919
Hi everyone, welcome back to another episode of Wellness and Wealth.
00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:07.200
My name is Wendy Manganaro, and I am your host.
00:00:07.519 --> 00:00:15.359
Today we are discussing the topic how to recognize and create your baseline happiness with Yenvi Trung.
00:00:15.919 --> 00:00:23.519
Yenvi is a 15-plus year veteran of the healthcare and wellness industries, a serial entrepreneur, investor, and thought leader.
00:00:23.679 --> 00:00:29.519
Yen began her career as an analytical chemist in a major pharmaceutical company.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:38.560
She ascended the ranks of several corporations and diagnostic startups before embarking on a career as the founder and catalyst of successful companies.
00:00:38.719 --> 00:00:49.359
She has founded and co-founded startups in the arenas of digital health and remote lifestyle monitoring, as well as metabolic, functional, anti-aging, and regenerative medicine.
00:00:49.600 --> 00:00:58.880
In the process, she has had the privilege of working alongside prominent physicians, Nobel laureates, and industry-leading healthcare innovators.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:08.000
Throughout her career, Yenby has embodied a passion for systemic reform, supporting the shift from a reactive disease care system to a proactive health care system.
00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:18.719
She lives this passion by promoting the implementation of cutting-edge technology, physiological, medical, and nutritional science developments into standard patient care.
00:01:18.959 --> 00:01:19.519
Welcome.
00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:21.359
That is quite big bio.
00:01:21.599 --> 00:01:23.280
I'm so glad you're here with us today.
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:24.799
Thanks, Wendy.
00:01:25.439 --> 00:01:26.000
Thank you.
00:01:26.239 --> 00:01:29.200
And I love this idea about baseline happiness.
00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:31.680
So I'm so glad that we're going to talk about that.
00:01:31.920 --> 00:01:37.760
And I also love that your bio reads a shift from reactive disease care system to proactive.
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:41.680
And I know that has probably a lot to do with learning what that baseline is.
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:43.359
So I really love those topics.
00:01:43.519 --> 00:01:45.439
I think they're so important, especially for women.
00:01:45.599 --> 00:01:49.599
So for you, what does that baseline happiness look like?
00:01:49.840 --> 00:02:03.359
I think it starts off with an awareness of whether you're happy or not, the feeling that things aren't right, the feelings that things aren't going the way, waking up in the morning and not excited about the morning.
00:02:03.519 --> 00:02:09.280
Those are instances and points in time where we're like, wait, things aren't working the way it is.
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:15.199
And sometimes we don't know what it is and we can't pinpoint what it is that's making us unhappy.
00:02:15.439 --> 00:02:22.639
We get so consumed with everything that's moving around us that we have a hard time becoming aware of what to put our fingers on.
00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:39.120
So I spent a lot of time really understanding my baseline of these are all the things that should be in place, the basic needs, the things that I've strived for, and there's certain types of quality of life, I know that I can be grateful for and be happy with.
00:02:39.199 --> 00:02:45.759
And just starting that, and there's different departments, I guess, in our life that impacts how we're happy or not.
00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:48.479
And so I can go over those pieces as well.
00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:54.560
Yeah, and it's so interesting that you're talking about this because I was actually just reading an article on stressors.
00:02:54.719 --> 00:03:11.039
But this idea, as we're talking about baseline happiness, is that it was an idea that it's the everyday thing that actually cumulatively stresses more than sometimes the traumatic thing and puts our body into a constant reactive mode.
00:03:11.280 --> 00:03:29.360
And I was, it was a mindfulness article, but it was saying that if you can catch yourself, which is what you're talking about essentially with the spaceline happiness, that you don't have to go into those constant fight or flight and those physical things that happen to us right at the beginning of a stressor.
00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:32.719
Like I'm one for always, I have no idea where my house keys are.
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:33.759
That never fails.
00:03:33.919 --> 00:03:37.199
They'll be in my hand half the time, but like little things like that.
00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:39.919
So is that kind of on the realm of what you're talking about?
00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:40.560
Low.
00:03:41.199 --> 00:03:50.400
One thing I always do when I feel that I'm a little bit out of flow or out of whack or I'm unhappy is I use this thing called the wheel of life.
00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:53.199
And it has these categories in your life.
00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:04.879
And very objectively, I rate myself in these categories right away because these stressors throughout the day can be triggers more than what's the core of my unhappiness.
00:04:05.120 --> 00:04:12.400
And so I go through this wheel of life and it's eight categories, and I'll share the categories of your job, your business, your career.
00:04:12.479 --> 00:04:17.120
That's one category, your finances, your health and well-being.
00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:18.720
Just are you healthy?
00:04:18.879 --> 00:04:25.519
Your family and friends, your community around you, the people that you interact with every day, your relationship with your partner.
00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:28.240
Are you doing things like personal growth?
00:04:28.319 --> 00:04:29.279
Are you growing every day?
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:33.680
Are you doing things that's challenging your growth and feeling that you're alive every day?
00:04:33.839 --> 00:04:36.000
And then are you doing things that's fun?
00:04:36.319 --> 00:04:40.800
Sometimes we're just so focused on work and doing that we forget to have fun as well.
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:42.959
And then the other is what's the environment?
00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:45.040
What's the stress factor around the environment?
00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:50.879
So I sit down and I really score myself on each of those categories.
00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:58.000
And then from there, you'll start to see, oh, wait a minute, I have a lot of friends, but I barely ever work out, for example.
00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:06.639
And so that could be a reason for why my cortisol is level, there's all these other physiological issues when you're sedentary, you don't work out and exercise.
00:05:06.800 --> 00:05:11.040
And so there's all these impact from just sitting down and doing that.
00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:14.560
For me, it's that objective baseline measurement.
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:20.000
And then it goes into the core of ah, this is probably why I can't sleep at night.
00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:27.680
This is why I'm moving through the day unhappy because my finances are out whack, or I don't have a relationship that I've been wanting.
00:05:27.839 --> 00:05:32.879
And so it's like these pieces that allows us to say, this is where I need to focus, right?
00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:36.800
This is where I need to focus is because all these things are in line.
00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:40.240
My wealth is in line, but my relationship with my family is not in line.
00:05:40.319 --> 00:05:44.160
So I need to focus on this to bring it me back to that happiness state.
00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:46.319
Yeah, I've seen those wheels before.
00:05:46.399 --> 00:05:53.360
And it's always interesting because sometimes you don't realize fun is a big one, I think, for a lot, especially for entrepreneurs.
00:05:53.519 --> 00:05:53.680
Yes.
00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:57.600
We get so much into work mode, we forget why we're doing this.
00:05:57.759 --> 00:06:00.160
I think that's the huge thing for female entrepreneurs.
00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:10.560
We go into our business and it's like, oh, it's because I want to make my own schedule, and all of these reasons that kind of give us independent, and then we take away our independent and go along with our company.
00:06:10.720 --> 00:06:13.120
So for you, I'd love to know was it always like that?
00:06:13.199 --> 00:06:17.680
What's in your journey of realizing that you needed a baseline of happiness?
00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:28.800
Oh boy, it's uh the lack of balance and the heavy focus in one area of your life and then losing balance or losing focus in other areas of your life, especially as an entrepreneur.
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:45.920
We focus so much on growing this baby of a business or this thing that we're putting our heart into that we forget about the relationships, our own finances, our own physical well-being, our mental state, and all these things that compounds every day as we ignore it.
00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:57.199
And so my journey was I started off in my career really heavy focused on business, on my companies, just growing my professional growth, and forgetting about everything else.
00:06:57.519 --> 00:07:03.600
And the further I got along with my career and my business, the less happy I was.
00:07:03.920 --> 00:07:06.800
And so I realized there's something wrong.
00:07:06.959 --> 00:07:08.240
I have to figure this out.
00:07:08.399 --> 00:07:28.240
And it took a lot of self-work and growth work and self-discovery and painful realizations and painful encounters with relationships and those types of things for me to realize that, oh wow, I've been neglecting all of these things around my life because I've been focused on one area.
00:07:28.319 --> 00:07:32.160
And so when we focus heavy on one area, we lose focus on the other.
00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:35.519
And that's where the baseline of happiness is starting up.
00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:38.160
How do we evaluate these areas in our life?
00:07:38.319 --> 00:07:43.040
And then if one is too heavy, the others are not being focused on.
00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:52.319
And so, how do we measure that and keep coming back to that baseline and ask ourselves am I happy in this category, in this category, in this category?
00:07:52.560 --> 00:07:55.360
Do I need to put a little bit more focus on this area now?
00:07:55.439 --> 00:08:02.160
And just I'm really doing really well here, but let's focus a little bit away here and get myself back to that place.
00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:08.800
And as you're talking about this, because I've been there, I've been where all career or they even all volunteer it sometimes.
00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:13.680
And I think it's just one thing we go to those extremes and we don't realize it creeps up on ourselves.
00:08:13.839 --> 00:08:17.759
But I'm curious to know from you, and it'll lead into my next question.
00:08:17.920 --> 00:08:32.159
But because sometimes it's hard to go and say, Oh, wait a second, I know that I'm unhappy, but really moving from one place to get back to that baseline, because sometimes you're so stuck in it, it feels really difficult.
00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:34.399
And you're like, okay, so what do I do now?
00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:39.519
So those female entrepreneurs that are telling themselves like they're not that very happy.
00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:46.159
Like, what are those warning signs, especially the one of not getting up in the morning and being able to be like, hey, I'm excited for my day.
00:08:46.399 --> 00:09:05.600
I think there's the question because we know when we're not happy, even when we're cruising along and all the check boxes are ticked off, that we have a family, that we have a roof overhead, that we're eating well, we have lots of money, but then we still sometimes find ourselves like, hmm, I'm still not happy.
00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:06.879
What are these things?
00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:08.720
It could be because we're not growing.
00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:09.679
We have all these things.
00:09:09.759 --> 00:09:11.600
Now we're just complacing and cruising along.
00:09:11.759 --> 00:09:12.559
It could be that.
00:09:12.720 --> 00:09:24.080
And so I think that's why I go back to the wheel of life is something that's so visual and so easy to just look at right away when we is that's that awareness that, hey, I'm not happy right now.
00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:25.519
I'm not where I want to be.
00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:39.360
Uh, this feeling doesn't feel right, starts with the awareness and then a tool, just a simple tool to say, okay, let me just check myself right now, because it does impact every, you know, these different compartments in our life.
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:44.480
And so having awareness and then a tool to just give us some direction.
00:09:44.559 --> 00:09:57.840
And all these things throughout every day is just triggers or just awareness stimulants that that's saying, hey, I'm not waking up in the morning, I can't get out of bed because I'm not excited for the day.
00:09:57.919 --> 00:10:00.559
That should be a trigger for us to create awareness.
00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:06.879
That should be a signal for us to realize that this is not, I'm not content.
00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:14.240
So being aware of those signals, I think is because for each of us, these signals could come in different ways.
00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:16.960
Yeah, and I agree with that.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:32.639
I do want to ask you something here because it does help with what you were talking about in your body, this idea of like reactive versus proactive healthcare, because I think actually, and I really do believe that with our health, that's probably where female entrepreneurs sometimes talk the most.
00:10:32.720 --> 00:10:34.320
And even for me, I know I have a tendency.
00:10:34.480 --> 00:10:36.159
I'm like, do I really have time to go to the doctor?
00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:37.519
And then I'm like in pain.
00:10:37.600 --> 00:10:42.559
I'm like, I guess I have time now because your body will tell you at some point in time.
00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:56.879
So I'd love to hear from you this idea of proactive health care on that baseline, because I don't think that as we get busy as moms and taking care of stuff or everybody else, that we always know the components of what that's supposed to look like.
00:10:57.039 --> 00:10:59.600
Other than care about mammiograms and stuff like that.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:01.919
But I think it goes a little further than that.
00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:14.159
I've been there where I've worked so hard that I'm exhausted, fatigue, and had health issues where because I wasn't taking care of myself, I was very heavy focused on one area.
00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:16.960
And because of that, it set me back.
00:11:17.360 --> 00:11:28.960
And so, as hard as we want to go forward, not taking care of ourselves and being preventative and taking care of our body and our mind could set us back by years.
00:11:29.200 --> 00:11:32.720
And so just keeping that in mind is so important.
00:11:33.039 --> 00:11:43.679
And also, when we give ourselves time to really rest, when we work really hard and we give ourselves time to rest, and then we're consistent with just walking every day and staying active.
00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:48.320
We don't have to go do CrossFit, we just have to be active, and so our body's moving.
00:11:48.480 --> 00:11:52.320
It will keep us healthy and keep our mindset healthy as well.
00:11:52.480 --> 00:12:04.559
I work out, I'm very mindful of doing my activities every day, meditating every day, because I know that it allows me to go even faster without having to feel the impact of going really fast, either.
00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:08.159
So my stamina, my energy level is much higher.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:10.720
And I'm going faster, I'm thinking faster.
00:12:10.799 --> 00:12:21.759
If I was slugging along, just pushing along like a boulder because I felt guilty or I felt in my own head that if I stop or I slow down, that I'm doing something wrong.
00:12:21.919 --> 00:12:31.600
Where actually, when I do give myself that time and that respect to myself, I actually go much quicker and I do much better.
00:12:34.159 --> 00:12:39.759
One of the things I was thinking about though is I've heard other guests say on this idea of going slow to go fast.
00:12:39.919 --> 00:12:43.919
And that is that what we're talking about, that day on, especially when you're talking about meditation.
00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:44.720
I love to meditate.
00:12:44.960 --> 00:12:46.399
It's one of my favorite things to do.
00:12:46.639 --> 00:12:57.120
And I noticed that when I don't do it, life becomes really overwhelming because I haven't taken that time as we get into rhythms and go, oh wait, what's that a whack here?
00:12:57.360 --> 00:13:02.320
And usually for me, it's because I haven't spent enough alone to just refocusing.
00:13:02.480 --> 00:13:04.879
And it helps you recenter too, obviously.
00:13:05.039 --> 00:13:07.200
And so then you can have more stamina.
00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:12.399
So for you, and I'm just curious because I've had guests come on and they're like, I don't need to nap during the day.
00:13:12.559 --> 00:13:16.480
Do you find that's like an individual thing as we're talking about care and self-care?
00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:18.480
Because I'm like, I love the five-minute nap.
00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:20.000
I'm the five-minute nap.
00:13:20.320 --> 00:13:28.320
So I'd love to hear from you like how that balance at Daiseline has helped you with stamina because everybody is so different about that.
00:13:28.559 --> 00:13:29.039
That's right.
00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:36.480
Everyone's different, and we shouldn't judge ourselves or compare ourselves to others on what's right for us and our body and our mind.
00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:46.399
And so I think we have a tendency to compare ourselves quite a bit to what's working for others should work for me, as opposed to let me feel this out, let me test it.
00:13:46.559 --> 00:13:48.320
And hey, this feels really great.
00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:51.039
And I saw results from it, so I'm gonna keep this.
00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:57.440
And that was part of my journey as well was trying everything that I could to find what worked for me.
00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:04.320
And so when I give suggestions, it's just my suggestions of what works for me, doesn't mean it's gonna work for you.
00:14:04.480 --> 00:14:07.440
But going back to the nap, occasionally I'll take a nap.
00:14:07.679 --> 00:14:09.759
If I feel like I need to, I'll take a nap.
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:14.320
I'll set my alarm for because I base a lot of the stuff that I do on science.
00:14:14.399 --> 00:14:21.039
I don't take more than a 20-minute nap because then you're going to like a deep state of sleep and everything like that, and you're more tired.
00:14:21.279 --> 00:14:24.559
So a power nap is if I needed to, I would do that.
00:14:24.720 --> 00:14:29.039
If I take espresso shot in the afternoon or eat carbs, don't eat carbs.
00:14:29.360 --> 00:14:33.840
There's all these things that are different for all of us when it comes to how we feel throughout the day.
00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:46.320
But what we do know is nutrition is a very big nutrition and being active, keeping our body moving are two key things to keeping our stamina and our mentality up as well, because it does reduce cortisol level.
00:14:46.399 --> 00:14:50.080
That's the stress factor that really creates a lot of chaos.
00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:57.039
We create our own chaos because we're producing all this stress chemical by not taking care of ourselves.
00:14:57.279 --> 00:14:57.840
Absolutely.
00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:00.399
And it's funny because my husband's like, How do you do that?
00:15:00.480 --> 00:15:01.919
I'm like, five minutes, I am good.
00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:05.279
It's half meditating, half quite quote unquote napping.
00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:06.960
But there is something about that.
00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:10.480
And if I do that once or twice during the day, I am good.
00:15:10.639 --> 00:15:13.679
And then if I don't know, I will feel it for the rest of the time.
00:15:13.919 --> 00:15:14.799
Why am I dragging?
00:15:14.879 --> 00:15:26.960
And I think that's important that as we're talking about this, and we're talking about that baseline is like really taking the time, and this is essentially what you're talking about is taking the time to find out really truly what works for you.
00:15:27.120 --> 00:15:32.159
And I love our show because there are so many suggestions on what could work for people and try them.
00:15:32.240 --> 00:15:38.639
I don't think that there's anything wrong with trying them all and then saying, okay, and this is what I found out that really works for us.
00:15:38.879 --> 00:15:39.200
That's right.
00:15:39.279 --> 00:15:40.480
And that's what the baseline is.
00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:42.080
You're finding out what works for you.
00:15:42.240 --> 00:15:46.720
You have a toolbox of things that help you and will work for you.
00:15:47.039 --> 00:15:56.799
And that's part of creating your happiness, making these types of discovery that's unique to you and to your happiness and what you find enjoyable.
00:15:57.039 --> 00:16:01.360
And so at the end of the day, we just got to do it, just move forward, just do it.
00:16:01.440 --> 00:16:13.200
And I think as an entrepreneur, the power in being an entrepreneur is that if I was working for a company and I had a boss or somebody, for me to take a five-minute power nap, I wouldn't be able to go do those types of discoveries.
00:16:13.360 --> 00:16:17.039
So the power of being your own boss and entrepreneur is hey, you know what?
00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:23.519
I'm gonna spend 15 minutes meditating without being questioned about it, because I'm the boss, I have this freedom.
00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:32.159
That's why we gave ourselves this challenge of being an entrepreneur so that we could have those moments of freedom when we need it the most and when we want them.
00:16:32.399 --> 00:16:36.559
And so it's empowering to be an entrepreneur for our own development.
00:16:36.879 --> 00:16:37.840
Yeah, absolutely.
00:16:38.080 --> 00:16:46.159
And so I have one last question, which is if someone doesn't know what their baseline is, and you talked about the wheel, but is that the first step to figuring it out?
00:16:46.480 --> 00:16:48.240
First, like I said, it's always awareness.
00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:58.639
And you brought up meditation, which I think is extremely important, and that's one of the areas where I find is the most impactful for every human being is meditation.
00:16:58.799 --> 00:17:16.720
And there's a lot of research and science around how meditation develops the prefrontal cortex, which is the area of the brain that helps you really rationalize and solve problems, and then it diminishes the impact of the amygdala, which is the fight or flight part of the brain, where you're always in a reactive state.
00:17:16.880 --> 00:17:29.519
And so, starting up with maybe meditation, because sometimes when I sit and meditate, even though we're trying to quiet the mind, I get these amazing solutions and epiphany just because I'm allowing my mind to quiet down.
00:17:29.680 --> 00:17:42.880
And so these are all just tools and different ways for us to get to that point to create awareness first, and then using a tool like the wheel, for example, to say, okay, where in my life is it unbalanced?
00:17:42.960 --> 00:17:47.279
And can I should I just focus on that a little bit more than the other areas?
00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:48.559
I agree.
00:17:48.640 --> 00:17:53.359
I am like I said, I've been meditating for years, and it always is the thing that brings me back.
00:17:53.519 --> 00:17:56.640
So whenever I'm out of balance, it's usually fun and meditation.
00:17:56.799 --> 00:17:58.319
It's amazing how the same too.
00:17:58.640 --> 00:18:00.000
It's amazing, it's so simple.
00:18:00.079 --> 00:18:05.519
You just sit there and just let yourself just sit there, and for some reason, everything just solves itself.
00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:07.200
It really does.
00:18:07.680 --> 00:18:11.920
So I'd love for you to share with everybody how to get in touch.
00:18:12.079 --> 00:18:14.319
